Liposuction - Making the Decision

Liposuction (whether traditional liposuction or SmartLipo) should be used for isolated or stubborn areas and not as a generic weight loss technique.

If you can honestly "yes" to the following questions, then I would suggest that you consult with a board certified plastic surgeon to see if you are a candidate:

  • Have you made a determined effort to lose the stomach roll through exercise and diet?
  • If you are average height, do you weigh less than 200 pounds? We would be careful to perform liposuction on patients over 200 pounds due to the effects of anesthesia.
  • Are you in good health?
  • Are you near your target weight? Liposuction would be possible only if you are not morbidly obese.

I would consider liposuction if you are NOT morbidly obese, in good health, and want to sculpt a few problem areas.

HOWEVER, I would NOT consider traditional liposuction when SmartLipo is available. The results are smoother, you'll have tighter skin, and less downtime!

You should you be able to exercise regularly and maintain a healthy lifestyle. No cosmetic procedure should be a crutch. Anyone can "out eat" ANY cosmetic procedure! So I wouldn't try it unless you are serious about keeping the "new" look:-)

A good liposuction candidate is one who has isolated fat deposits that are recalcitrant (resistant) to diet and exercise and is not tremendously overweight.

Patients who have elastic skin and do not have a lot of skin sagging and redundancy are the best candidates.

Liposuction is for stubborn areas of fat. You should otherwise be as close to your ideal bodyweight as possible before undergoing liposuction.
