What is SmartLipo?

SmartLipo is a laser lipolysis device designed to melt subcutaneous fat for removal through suction and simultaneously tighten the surrounding skin.

The key distinction between traditional liposuction and laser-assisted liposuction is the improvement in the preparation process for the removal of fat cells. Because the laser liquefies the fat cells, the size of cannula required to remove them is significantly smaller. Laser assisted liposuction allows for a very small incision, and promises a less invasive procedure, and therefore a faster recovery.

Although SmartLipo promises skin tightening as an additional benefit to the procedure, it may not be appropriate for people who have excessive skin laxity. For those who need a major reduction of excess skin, an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck may be more appropriate.

Several other new brand-name devices combine traditional suction with laser or ultrasound technology to provide additional features. Some of these devices include Cool Lipo, VASER Liposelection, and ProLipo.
